Playing your music through is not practice
What do you consider a typical music practice session should consist of?
Being able to play the entire piece through is important but doing just this – and nothing else – will not help you improve. The same mistakes and stumbles will remain (and possibly get reinforced) if you don’t pay attention to them.
The following quote from Einstein comes to mind:
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Taking the time to stop and focus on certain sections of the music, however, and drilling down into the detail is a vital part of practising.
There are lots of great articles on this subject and I have my own practice tips here. I’d love to hear your thoughts on practice.
