A student is almost always motivated to practice if he leaves his lessons feeling capable
Frances Clark
For me this is definitely one of the most important ingredients to ensure students actually go home and practice!
One of my earliest memories of childhood piano lessons involves a piece I can’t actually remember the name of. Which is surprising as I played that piece to death and annoyed my family beyond words!
But the point is my teacher had laid the foundations so well for it that I felt capable when I left the lesson. I was inspired to practice – and oh did I practice!
On the other hand, if I was given some schoolwork which I didn’t really understand, there was probably quite a lot of nagging from mum to get on and do it (sorry mum!).
